First Aid Training
The Occupational Health and Safety Act require employers to make adequate first aid training available for their employees.
Employees who are the elected to be first aid representatives are required to attend accreted first aid training where they will be trained and accessed. In an emergency situation in the workplace, the first aid representative will be able to react, treat and deal with the situation in a calm and safe manor.
First Aid – Level 1
Designed to equip employees with basic life support techniques in the workplace. The course is aligned with the requirements of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993 for trained workplace First Aiders. This unit standard is for persons required to assess the emergency situation and providing basic Life Support and basic First Aid in order to stabilize patients prior to transfer to the emergency services.
First Aid – Level 2
Designed for learners who have already completed the Level 1 course, and for learners who wish to obtain advanced skills. The course covers additional skills such as child and adult CPR techniques and choking maneuvers, blood pressure monitoring and other more advanced life support skills and knowledge. This unit standard is intended to enable the first responder in an emergency situation to react to health emergencies at an advanced level, until the arrival of more qualified emergency personnel.
